Not sure what to expect when you walk out of arrivals and need a taxi? Here’s how it works at all four international airports in Bosnia and Herzegovina, what the meter should say, and how to avoid getting ripped off.

How to get a taxi at the airport
1. Follow the signs to the taxi rank outside arrivals. All major airports have a marked taxi area right outside the terminal doors. Ignore anyone offering you a fixed price ride inside the building. They are usually not official.
2. Look for blue or white roof signs with the taxi company name. In Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Tuzla, and Mostar, official taxis have visible branding. If in doubt, ask airport staff to point you to the queue.
3. Ask for the meter to be turned on before you get in. Say “Molim, taxi metar.” If the driver refuses, walk to the next car or tell the dispatcher.
4. Pay in BAM or EUR. Most drivers prefer cash. Some taxis in Sarajevo accept cards, but always ask before you get in. Have small bills for change. If you use EUR, you will get change in BAM.
How to know you’re not getting ripped off
- Check that the meter starts at the correct tariff (see table above)
- Do not accept a “fixed price” inside the terminal unless you like overpaying
- For short rides into the city, prices will almost always match the numbers above
Special situations
Late night and holidays
Some companies add a small surcharge after midnight or on major holidays, but prices rarely go above the upper end of the range.
Taxi apps
In Sarajevo, you can use the MojTaxi or Sarajevo Taxi app, which works like a normal dispatch service. Banja Luka, Tuzla, and Mostar have phone dispatch and taxi ranks only.
Longer rides and cross-border
If you are going to another town, always ask for an estimated fare before you leave the airport. For cross-border rides, use a private transfer service like transfers.ba.
Should you tip your driver?
Tipping is not required, but rounding up to the nearest KM or adding a euro or two for great service is appreciated.
