- European Union citizens
- United Kingdom
- USA and Canada
- Australia and New Zealand
- Turkey
- Many other countries in Europe, the Gulf, and South America
Visa-free for up to 30 days:
- UAE
- Qatar
- Kuwait
If you are unsure, check the full list at the official MFA website.
Who needs a visa?
Travellers from most African countries, China, India, Pakistan, and several others need a visa in advance. If you are not on the visa-free list, apply at the nearest Bosnia and Herzegovina embassy or consulate. You cannot get a visa on arrival.
Passport rules
- Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned exit date
- For some Gulf states, validity must be six months—always double check
Documents you may need at the border
- Passport with enough validity
- Proof of onward travel or return ticket
- Proof of accommodation (hotel booking, invitation letter, or address of your stay)
- Proof of funds (cash, credit card, or recent bank statement)
- Travel insurance is sometimes checked; a printed policy is enough
Border police can ask for any of these. If you travel by car, have your vehicle’s documents and “Green Card” insurance ready.
Visa for longer stays
If you want to stay longer than 90 days (for work, study, or family reasons), you must apply for a temporary residence permit through the Ministry of Security. Rules can change—contact the relevant office before your trip.
For travellers with children
If you are travelling with children without both parents, bring a signed parental consent letter and a copy of the absent parent’s ID or passport. This is occasionally checked at the border.
Onward travel to Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro
Bosnia and Herzegovina borders three countries. Check their visa rules if you plan to leave and re-enter—each crossing is a full passport control.
FAQ
Do I need a visa for a short holiday?
Most Western travellers do not need a visa for up to 90 days. Double check your country here.
Can I enter with an ID card instead of a passport?
EU and EFTA nationals can enter with a national ID card. All others need a passport.
Can I extend my visa-free stay?
No. The ninety days are counted per entry period, not per calendar year. You must leave and re-enter, but “visa runs” are sometimes refused.
Do I need travel insurance? It is not legally required for short visits, but highly recommended. Some border officers ask for proof, especially if you arrive by car or from non-EU countries.
Where do I get the most up-to-date rules?
Visit the official MFA website or contact your local Bosnian embassy before travel.
